Holiday Advice

If You Are Going Away

So you have finally decided to take that much needed holiday. You have spent time reorganising your work schedule, dealt with all the minor shopping needs and have booked your tickets. Congratulations. But don’t bring out the champagne so soon. Do not ever advertise that you will not be in your house. The minute a burglar comes to know about it, your house will be the target spot for many people. It is not safe to let people know that you are out. If you really want to brag about your trip, do it when you get back.  It is wiser and safer.

Majority of burglaries take place when the owner is away. So do not let out that the flat or house is going to be empty from such and such date to such and such date. Make it seem like you are still living there. Make it seem like it is occupied and life does exist in there. The best time for robberies to take place is in the night or maybe in the evening. If they are aware that the house will be empty, so they take it really easy and try to make sure that the deed is done while you are away. So there are a few things that you should remember to do so that it seems like you have not gone anywhere.

The first tip that you should always follow when you are home is to make your presence known. So always leave your curtains open during the day. Keeping them drawn might make the robbers suspect that you are not in. Get a system with a time system that automatically switches on and off lights at certain times throughout the day. Have a radio o a TV alarm that turns itself on randomly. A quiet house is a suspicious house. So make some noise even when you are ten thousand miles away. These are easily available from shops that sell ‘do it yourself’ kits.

The next most important thing to remember to do is to stash all your valuable items away safely. Put all your money in a bank and jewellery and other stuff in a safe deposit locker. Never leave anything in public view. Cancel all your newspaper subscriptions and even your milk deliveries. Seeing unpicked up morning papers and milk will make it pretty obvious that no one is inside to pick it up. Never ever put up stickers or labels with your address on your luggage. You ma be safe in the confines of an airport but there are prospective burglars lurking there as well. All they have to do is to note the address and go to your place while you are holidaying away in Bali, Aruba, or Jamaica.

The best thing to do is to ask a friend or a relative to keep an eye on the house for you. Ask them to pick up any parcels left at your doorstep, check your mail, and move some stuff about in your house now and then so that your house looks lived in. Of course you need to be ready to return the favour.
